Abstinence Only Failure
THE ABSTINENCE PROJECT
The science is clear: abstinence-only sex ed is not only ineffective, but also harmful. Everyone, including young people, have the human right to be empowered with information and skills needed to stay safe and healthy. Abstinence-only sex ed relies on inaccurate and fear-based information delivered through scare tactics. This project aims to expose those harms through the art of storytelling.
Abstinence-only sex ed lacks accuracy, inclusivity, and safety. Having access to medically accurate, inclusive, and comprehensive information about sexual and reproductive health is a human right.
Why is Comprehensive education important ?
1. ACCURACY.
15 states in the USA do not require sex education content to be medically accurate or evidence-based (citation).
2. INCLUSIVITY.
8 states explicitly require teachers use LGBTQ+ discriminating curricula by banning LGBTQ+ content (citation).
3 . SAFETY.
86.3% of LGBTQ+ students experience harassing language at school that contributes to a hostile learning environment (citation).
